4 Points That Leads to Wedding Photography Greatness

    Friday, February 26th, 2010

Below is an article i wrote for some international article service for professional wedding photographers, just thought i share them with you all

Hope it makes for some meaningful readings

If you got into wedding photography solely for the financial rewards, you probably are not successful at what you do, and if you are, you probably are not as successful as you should or could be.

Gone are the days when wedding photographers were looked at as mere handy men, that perception has since changed, we now have celebrity wedding photographers who command just as much media attention as the movie stars they shoot.

The advent of digital has also helped many take up wedding photography as a profession.

So what make one a great wedding photographer in Nigeria?

Personally i have shot with some of the finest photographers on the planet both back home in Nigeria where wedding photography is entering a new phase and also outside my home country. Interacting with this great minds led me to come up with some key points that should be taken quite seriously if you are to move to that next step in your quest to be a top, highly sort after wedding photographer.

    1. Consistency: Probably the most important point here. A great photographer needs to be consistent, needs to be able to turn out amazingly breathtaking pictures and albums on regular basis. You can not afford to produce an outstanding album for client A while at the same time being unable to deliver a comparable quality to Client B. Consistency comes from experience, consistency comes from knowing your equipment, consistency comes from knowing the basics of photography. You might want to pickup that dusty camera manual up and give it a good reading.

    2. Character: Successful wedding photographers are know to have great likable characters. You need to express a lovable character not only to the bride and groom but also to people you come across, you never know where your next wedding is coming from. Brides tend to relax when being photographed by photographers they like and are comfortable with. A comfortable bride makes for awesome images. You need to be approachable as a wedding photographer to achieve greatness, this way people will talk about you. While it is very easy to get very angry while shooting a Nigerian wedding one has to be in control of his emotions. Nigerian weddings can get very unruly and over crowded.

    3. Self Development: You need to constantly be up to date in your area of specialization. This does not mean going out and buying all the newest cameras and gear the minute they are announced, but you need to be constantly be in search of new ideas, strategies, solutions, techniques that will stand your photography apart. Nobody wants to see the same sort of images again and again, you need to be able to consistently bring something fresh to the table. A couple of old photographers in Nigeria still shoot only film, while this is not such a bad thing if you are based in America, it is not the same case here in Nigeria where all you can get in ASA 200 films and bad quality development chemicals. Access to digital has helped even the playing field to a large extent for the best wedding photographers in Nigeria

    4. Concentration: To make great wedding photography, you need to be totally immersed in any wedding you are shooting. As a wedding photographer in Nigeria, this is not always the easiest point to achieve. The reason for this is that Nigerian weddings usually have numerous wedding photographers shooting the same wedding, try eight wedding photographers covering the same event, it tends to get very crazy. But if your goal is to attain greatness in this discipline, you need to concentrate, loss of concentrations will mean you losing those spontaneous images that leads to greatness.

Good wedding photography is all about interaction and expression

    Nigerian Weddings bring satisfaction?

    Thursday, February 18th, 2010

    Hi there friends,

Hope you all had a lovely Valentine weekend.

Yesterday I delivered two albums to parents of a couple and i was so touched by their reactions.

Ok, so the bride and groom were not present but the siblings and parents were.

Some of the pictures were also sent to the bride and groom via email and she was as delighted as her family.

As photographers, one moment we live for is that very second when your album is opened right before your very eyes, (if you are not careful, you will miss it)… that second when your pictures are sighted by “other people’s eyes” for the very first time, the reaction on their faces goes a long way and says it all, its right there you know if you have done a great job or not.

I was particularly touched by this particular wedding as it was for a family, i have had the pleasure of also shooting one of their other daughters.

This is what the bride’s sister had to say (She sent me an sms afterward) -

Kayode ti pa mi o! U have outdone urself o! Majorly!! I’m so impressed. Super super super ! Infact I’m beyond amazed. THANK YOU !!!! God bless U! kemi Hmmmm, its not everyday photographers get to hear the words, Thank you and God bless you, all in the same sentence.

The bride wasn’t to be outdone too, after seeing some of the pictures, this is what she had to say, all the way from the UK

Hmmmm…. Mr Xsightn.. My family has been singing ur praises so far…. “Kayode has outdone himself” is one of d quotes… Now I can’t wait… Saw a few pics n I’m giddy with excitement… Thank you for capturing such a beautiful n special day in our lives…. God bless you..   Hmmm, another prayer o.

So why do i share this with you (other than wanting more business from you) well it’s because anybody that has ever booked an Xsightn wedding knows how much i hate to haggle over price, for me it goes way beyond that, wedding photography should be art, it should be beautiful, it should make you want to cry and shouldn’t be reduced to a commodity. Wedding photography shouldn’t  be all about the cost of the package, while i also understand that budget can be limited, it pays in the long run to invest in a quality wedding package.

At Xsightn, we are more concerned about telling your stories with beautiful imagery. we didn’t get into this line of work primarily to make money, we love photography, wedding photography precisely, photography for us started as an hobby, as a passion.

So what are you waiting for, get on the phone and book yourself an Xsightn Wedding, oh, no credit ? Send us an email – info@xsightn.com and we will respond in 2 hours max.

Wedding Photoshoot of Hyacinth and Amma

    Sunday, February 14th, 2010

I had such a fun time shooting this folks, you could see they were both really into each other. I tried to capture the moment as best as i could. Shooting such photography sessions in Nigeria, especially in Lagos, is never a plea sent sight as you have lots of street thugs to contend we, we got our fair share of harassment but it was to be expected so we made the best of the situation.
